State Essay Questions

State Essay Questions
are a component of the bar examination in a majority of jurisdictions in the United States.  State essay questions are usually administered in conjunction with the Multistate Bar Exam, a national multiple choice test testing black letter law on the topics of constitutional law, contracts, criminal law and procedure, evidence, real property, and torts.  State law is generally not taught in law schools, so it is very important to read state law distinctions and to read practice essays and answers. BarBri offers state law essay books and distinction books for practically every jurisdiction. I wrote out about 20 BarBri state (Massachusetts) essay question answers the first time I took a bar exam.  BarBri grades a few of your essays as part of their basic program.  Most of my practice essays received borderline-passing grades. When I sat for the bar exam in another state (Florida), I didn't write out any essay questions, but I read through several dozen exam questions and answers. I easily passed both bar exams.

State essay questions test law determined to be important by the state administering the bar exam.  Most state bar websites list areas of law open for testing.  Often larger states will also administer state multiple choice questions to further test knowledge of state law.
